More about this artwork

“Patterdale from Martindale Fell,” a splendid artwork by Joseph Farington, captivates viewers with its serene and picturesque portrayal of the English countryside. This landscape painting presents a tranquil view of Patterdale, a valley in the Lake District, as seen from the elevated perspective of Martindale Fell. The foreground features a majestic, sprawling tree whose branches elegantly frame the scene, inviting the viewer into this peaceful vista. Beneath the tree, a figure accompanied by a child is seen in gentle communion with nature, enhancing the pastoral mood of the painting. This human element adds a touch of narrative, suggesting a moment of leisurely enjoyment or perhaps a pause during travel.Beyond this intimate foreground, the middle ground stretches out to reveal the shimmering waters of Ullswater Lake, reflecting the subtle tones of the sky. Small boats dot the lake, their presence a testament to the area's appeal for both local inhabitants and visitors. The landscape unfolds with lush fields and sparse settlements, leading the eye gently towards the rugged mountains that rise dramatically in the backdrop.Farington’s masterful use of muted colors and detailed brushwork conjures a sense of both breadth and detail, offering a window into the serene and enduring beauty of Patterdale.

Joseph Farington RA was an 18th-century English landscape painter and diarist.

Born in Leigh, Lancashire, Farington was the second of seven sons of William Farington and Esther Gilbody. His father was the rector of Warrington and vicar of Leigh. Three of his brothers—William, Henry, and Richard—were "employed in the naval service of the East India Company". Edward died of yellow fever when he was 32. Robert attended Brasenose College and became vicar of St George in the East, London (whose advowson was held by Brasenose). George Farington became a painter, like Joseph himself.
