More about this artwork

Gustav Klimt, known for his sensuous and golden detailed portraits, reveals a different artistic dimension in the delicate drawing titled "Auf einem Sofa liegende Frau" (Woman Lying on a Sofa). This minimalist sketch, rendered with fluid, confident lines, captures a woman in a state of serene repose. Here, Klimt simplifies form and detail, emphasizing the elegance and curvature of the female figure as she lies gracefully on a sofa. The artwork eschews complexity in favor of a stark and expressive approach. With only a few strokes, Klimt manages to convey a sense of depth and softness, encapsulating the woman's peaceful slumber. The drawing's muted tonality and subtle shading invite the viewer to focus on the tranquility and vulnerability of the subject. This piece is an exquisite example of Klimt’s mastery in capturing the essence of his subjects, showcasing his versatility as an artist beyond his renowned ornate style. "Auf einem Sofa liegende Frau" is both a testament to Klimt's artistic range and a poignant reflection on the quiet moments of human life.

Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was one of the greatest Austrian symbolist painters of the Art Nouveau era. Renowned as one of the most prominent founding members, and as a president of the Vienna Art Nouveau movement (Vienna Secession). His works were mainly paintings, murals, and sketches. Marked by his numerous erotic drawings, Klimt's primary subject were female figures, and at one point his work was even criticized as pornographic. Klimt found financial success in his "Golden Phase" with decorative techniques and the prominent use of gold leaf in his paintings.
