More about this artwork

"Paris" by Anthony van Dyck, painted around 1628, is an enthralling portrait that delves into the mythology of the Trojan prince known for his pivotal role in the events leading to the Trojan War. This painting captures Paris in a moment of introspective vulnerability, a stark departure from his usual portrayal as the shepherd or the dashing prince entangled in divine affairs. In this work, van Dyck portrays Paris with a naturalistic and sensitive approach. The subject's curly, tousled hair and his soft, contemplative expression endow him with a human-like quality that is deeply relatable. Paris is depicted partially draped in a rich, blue robe whose folds beautifully catch the light, showcasing van Dyck’s skill in rendering textures and colors with an almost tactile quality. The stark, dark background focuses all attention on Paris himself, highlighting his bare chest and the gentle grip of his left hand on a spear. This element not only serves as a reminder of Paris's status as a warrior but also subtly hints at the impending conflict, symbolized through this simple prop. This painting is a masterful example of Anthony van Dyck's ability to merge portraiture with historical narrative, creating a piece that is not only striking in appearance but also rich in storytelling.

Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599 – 1641) was a Flemish Baroque artist who became the leading court painter in England after success in the Spanish Netherlands and Italy.

The seventh child of Frans van Dyck, a wealthy Antwerp silk merchant, Anthony painted from an early age. He was successful as an independent painter in his late teens, and became a master in the Antwerp guild in 1618. By this time he was working in the studio of the leading northern painter of the day, Peter Paul Rubens, who became a major influence on his work.
