More about this artwork
Léon Augustin Lhermitte's 1897 painting, "Aôut" (August), captures the essence of rural labor at the height of summer. The canvas is alive with the golden hues of the harvest season, telling a story of tireless work under a vast sky. This scene, set in a sprawling wheat field, shows three figures deeply engaged in the timeless practice of reaping. The central figure, adorned in a sun hat, is poised in motion, the swing of his scythe emphasized by Lhermitte's dynamic brush strokes. Another worker bends over, gathering the cut wheat into sheaves, while a third, also in a hat, works in the background, blending into the sunbathed field. The variegated yellow and brown tones of the field contrast dynamically with the expansive, softly clouded sky, underscoring a sense of openness and the sheer scale of the task.Lhermitte, renowned for his Realist approach, portrays the physicality of their labor with a palpable sense of heat and exertion, yet also imbues the scene with a dignity and a rhythm that feels almost celebratory. This painting is not just a depiction of agricultural labor; it is an homage to the land and those who toil on it.
