More about this artwork

In the exquisite landscape painting "Pri rieke" ("By the River"), created by Slovak artist Ľudovít Čordák between 1915 and 1920, viewers are invited into a tranquil riverside scene that effortlessly captures the essence of calm and contemplation. The canvas dimensions itself into a portal looking over a gentle river, reflecting a sky brushed with soft, diffuse clouds. The foreground features rocky outcroppings and sparse greenery, dipping gently towards the water, which is dotted with lazy, sunlit ripples and stones peeking above the surface. The river banks are framed by a distant treeline, lush with varying shades of green and hints of autumnal reds and oranges, suggesting the painting may depict an early fall setting. The muted palate of blues, greens, and earth tones Čordák employs not only evoke a sense of peacefulness but also his mastery in capturing the light and mood of the natural world. This scene is not just a visual experience but an invitation to pause and reflect, mirroring the quiet stillness of an undisturbed riverside."Pri rieke" is a mesmerizing interpretation of nature’s quiet moments, showcasing Čordák's ability to transcend simple landscape art to evoke deeper emotions in viewers, allowing them to experience the serene whispers of nature through his eyes.

Ludwig Deutsch was an Austrian painter who settled in Paris and became a noted Orientalist artist.

Details of Ludwig Deutsch's life are obscure. He was born in Vienna in 1855 into a well-established Jewish family. His father Ignaz Deutsch was a financier at the Austrian court. He studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts 1872–1875, then, in 1878, moved to Paris where he became strongly associated with Orientalism.
