More about this artwork
Jozef Israëls, a prominent figure of the Hague School, masterfully captures the essence of maternal devotion in his poignant painting "Mother's Treasure." The artwork portrays a tender moment in a dimly lit, rustic interior that serves as a backdrop to the themes of love and simplicity. At the heart of the scene, a mother sits absorbed in her knitting, her figure rendered in soft, shadowy tones that contrast with the natural light spilling through a nearby window. Her expression is one of quiet contemplation, perhaps reflecting on the joys and responsibilities of motherhood. To her right, nestled within a cozy cradle, lies her infant, peacefully asleep under the careful watch of its mother. The child, enveloped in a warm blanket, symbolizes the innocence and vulnerability treasured by the mother. The setting is humble, with unadorned walls and simple household items lining the mantle, suggesting a life stripped of excess, where the real treasure is the bond between mother and child. The sparing use of color and the gentle play of light and shadow in the painting evoke a sense of intimacy and tranquility, inviting the viewer to reflect on the universal values of love and family.

Jozef Israëls was a Dutch painter. He was a leading member of the group of landscape painters referred to as the Hague School and, during his lifetime, "the most respected Dutch artist of the second half of the nineteenth century".
He was born in Groningen, of Jewish parents. His father, Hartog Abraham Israëls, intended for him to be a businessman, and it was only after a determined struggle that he was allowed to embark on an artistic career. He studied initially from 1835 to 1842 at the Minerva Academy in his home town Groningen.
