More about this artwork
Jean-Léon Gérôme's evocative painting, "La Fuite En Égypte (Nuit)" ("The Flight into Egypt (Night)"), transports the viewer to a serene yet solemn moment under the moonlit sky. This masterful work captures the biblical flight of the Holy Family into Egypt, a poignant episode in Christian narratives where Joseph, Mary, and the infant Jesus flee from King Herod's decree.Gérôme, renowned for his attention to detail and historical accuracy, uses his skill to cast this spiritual journey against a stark, expansive landscape that emphasizes the magnitude and solitude of their journey. The painting is enveloped in a tranquil nocturnal blue, lit softly by the glowing moon which bathes the desert in a gentle, ethereal light. This celestial body not only illuminates the scene but also serves as a symbolic guide for the travelers.Foreground details reveal Joseph leading a donkey, upon which Mary sits, cradling the young Jesus. Their figures are draped in traditional garments, casting long shadows that mingle with the rocky terrain. The family's expressions, faint yet discernible, mirror the gravity of their silent, steadfast trek towards safety."La Fuite En Égypte (Nuit)" is not just a visual recounting of a biblical tale, but a powerful meditation on themes of exile, protection, and faith. Gérôme's painting invites viewers to reflect on the depth of the family’s plight, as well as the enduring human spirit in the face of peril.

Jean-Léon Gérôme was a French painter and sculptor in the style now known as academicism. His paintings were so widely reproduced that he was "arguably the world's most famous living artist by 1880." The range of his oeuvre included historical painting, Greek mythology, Orientalism, portraits, and other subjects, bringing the academic painting tradition to an artistic climax. He is considered one of the most important painters from this academic period. He was also a teacher with a long list of students.
