More about this artwork

"St. Germain l’Auxerrois" (1867) by Oscar-Claude Monet is a captivating example of the artist’s early work, showcasing his burgeoning interest in light and color that would come to full fruition in his later Impressionist pieces. This painting depicts a bustling scene outside the St. Germain l’Auxerrois Church in Paris, capturing a moment that is both ordinary and extraordinary through Monet's lens. The church itself, a historic edifice with Gothic architectural features, dominates the composition. Its detailed façade, capturing the intricate rose window and the arched entryways, contrasts sharply with the animated life happening in the foreground. The scene is alive with activity; elegantly attired Parisians and horse-drawn carriages move across the plaza, creating a lively atmosphere.Monet's use of light and shadow, as well as his palette of blues and earth tones, underscores the vibrancy of urban life juxtaposed against the timeless grandeur of the church. This painting not only offers a glimpse into Parisian society of the 19th century but also illustrates Monet’s skill in portraying light variations, which would later become a hallmark of his career.Perfect for both art enthusiasts and history buffs, "St. Germain l’Auxerrois" invites viewers to step back in time and experience a Parisian day under Monet’s masterful brush strokes.

Oscar-Claude Monet was a founder of French Impressionist painting, and the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions before nature. Monet's ambition of documenting the French countryside led him to adopt a method of painting the same scene many times in order to capture the changing of light and the passing of the seasons. From 1883 Monet lived in Giverny, where he purchased a house and property, and began a vast landscaping project which included lily ponds that would become the subjects of his best-known works. In 1899 he began painting the water lilies, first in vertical views with a Japanese bridge as a central feature, and later in the series of large-scale paintings that was to occupy him continuously for the next 20 years of his life.
