More about this artwork

Experience the Mediterranean charm captured by the master of Impressionism, Oscar-Claude Monet, in his exquisite painting "Bordighera". Painted in 1884, this artwork offers a vivid view of the lush, abundant greenery and the azure seas of the Italian Riviera.Bordighera, a town known for its exotic beauty and serene landscapes, is portrayed through Monet's distinctive, quick brush strokes which vividly capture the play of light and shadow. The foreground of the painting is dominated by twisted olive trees, their trunks gnarled and leaves shimmering under the Mediterranean sun. These trees frame a glimpse of the distant town, depicted with delicate hues of earth and stone, nestled between the sea and the sky.The alluring blue of the sea merges seamlessly with the sky, suggesting an infinite vista and inviting contemplation on the harmonious blend of nature and habitation. Monet's rich, textured application of paint and his interplay of colors convey a sense of immediacy and the fleeting quality of a moment, which is a hallmark of the Impressionist movement."Bordighera" not only showcases Monet’s unparalleled ability to translate nature onto canvas but also his deep appreciation for the natural beauty of the Italian coast. This painting invites viewers to escape into a serene, almost otherworldly setting, reflecting the timeless allure of Italy’s picturesque landscapes.

Oscar-Claude Monet was a founder of French Impressionist painting, and the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions before nature. Monet's ambition of documenting the French countryside led him to adopt a method of painting the same scene many times in order to capture the changing of light and the passing of the seasons. From 1883 Monet lived in Giverny, where he purchased a house and property, and began a vast landscaping project which included lily ponds that would become the subjects of his best-known works. In 1899 he began painting the water lilies, first in vertical views with a Japanese bridge as a central feature, and later in the series of large-scale paintings that was to occupy him continuously for the next 20 years of his life.
