More about this artwork
"Above The Sea" by Paul Gauguin, painted in 1889, is a compelling landscape that depicts the rugged beauty of coastal terrain, accompanied by the drama of human presence. This vibrant depiction showcases Gauguin’s characteristic use of bold colors and expressive brushwork. The painting captures a picturesque scene from an elevated cliff overlooking a tranquil sea. The perspective sweeps down the curling cove, streaked with varying shades of blue and pink, reflecting the shifting colors of the water below. The rugged cliff is a kaleidoscope of earthy greens, oranges, and mauves, enhancing the wild, untamed quality of the landscape.Intriguingly, Gauguin includes figures within this natural setting – a woman sitting on the grassy edge and two other figures standing in the distance. These human elements add a narrative dimension to the work, suggesting a moment of daily life that connects humanity to the vastness of nature.

Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin was a French Post-Impressionist artist. Unappreciated until after his death, Gauguin is now recognized for his experimental use of color and Synthetist style that were distinct from Impressionism. Toward the end of his life, he spent ten years in French Polynesia. The paintings from this time depict people or landscapes from that region.
