More about this artwork

The artwork "Lampe und Bücher" (Lamp and Books), created by Karl Wiener around 1921, is a captivating example of early 20th-century expressionist art. In vivid, bold strokes, Wiener portrays a serene still-life, dominated by a lamp with an intricately textured, dark-colored lampshade, which starkly contrasts with the warmly illuminated, swirling base beneath it. The backdrop hints at a quiet room, where one can imagine the soft hum of solitude, perhaps a study or a personal library. The presence of books, faintly visible and stacked beside the lamp, adds an element of intellectual pursuit and cozy domesticity. The use of vibrant colors and energetic lines not only highlights the key focal elements of the lamp and books but also injects an emotional depth, suggesting the warmth and comfort associated with a personal reading nook.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
