More about this artwork

"Act of Violence against Two Women" is a powerful and deeply disturbing painting by the renowned Spanish artist Francisco de Goya, created between 1810 and 1812. This work reflects Goya's reaction to the horrors of violence and war, themes that are prevalent in many of his pieces from this period, notably during the Peninsular War.The painting depicts a nighttime scene illuminated only by the faint glow emanating from the struggle itself. Two women find themselves amidst a brutal assault by soldiers. The foreground shows a woman seated on the ground, desperately trying to fend off a soldier who is grabbing her face. Her look of anguish and her wide-open mouth suggest she is perhaps screaming or pleading. A child clings to her arm, adding a layer of heart-wrenching desperation to the scene. This young figure, partially undressed and seemingly helpless, increases the emotional intensity of the composition. To the right, another soldier is seen with a woman, who appears limp and possibly unconscious, a victim of the soldier's violent actions. The chaotic ensemble of figures and the murky, indistinct background brushstrokes serve to emphasize the bleakness and brutality of the scene.Goya’s use of dark tones and shadow not only sets a somber mood but also underlines the theme of human suffering and cruelty. The painting forces the viewer to confront the vile aspects of human nature and the traumatic impacts of war, making it a stark testament to Goya's masterful ability to evoke emotion and provoke reflection through his art.

Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (30 March 1746 – 16 April 1828) was a Spanish romantic painter and printmaker. He is considered the most important Spanish artist of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His paintings, drawings, and engravings reflected contemporary historical upheavals and influenced important 19th- and 20th-century painters. Goya is often referred to as the last of the Old Masters and the first of the moderns.
