More about this artwork

The remarkable painting titled "Waldschratt" by the artist Karl Wiener is a unique exploration of color and silhouette that brings the mystical allure of the forest to life. Created around 1922, this artwork captivates the viewer with its poignant use of stark contrasts and intriguing subject matter. The scene depicts the mysterious figure of a forest creature, known as a Waldschratt, in a dimly lit woodland setting during twilight. This creature, portrayed bending over with a bright red adornment on its head, adds a vivid splash of color to the otherwise dark palette dominated by black and dusky yellow. The forest around the creature is densely packed with tall, slim trees, their trunks and foliage portrayed in solid black with intricate white patterns that resemble the light filtering through leaves.Karl Wiener's "Waldschratt" achieves a dramatic visual impact through its simplified yet powerful color scheme, bringing the folklore-associated character of the Germanic forest spirit to the forefront. The painting engenders a sense of curiosity and otherworldliness, drawing the audience into a folklore-rich dimension that blurs the line between reality and myth.As viewers immerse themselves in this evocative artwork, they are invited to ponder the narratives and legends that forests have inspired through the ages.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
