More about this artwork

Karl Wiener’s “Revue – Diva” from 1944 is a striking and vibrant mixed-media piece that captures the essence of theatrical extravagance coupled with surreal artistic expression. In this painting, the central figure, a dramatic and flamboyant diva, stands confidently, enveloped in a richly detailed and expansive dress that seems to merge traditional elegance with abstract design. Her attire is a collage of intricate patterns and textures, suggesting a fusion of different cultural influences and fashion epochs. The background is a deep, enigmatic black, punctuated by abstract geometric lines and celestial motifs such as stars and planets, which add a cosmic aura to the scene. This not only highlights the diva but also creates a sense of a grand performance set against an infinitely vast and starry backdrop. The heart shapes floating around her add a playful, whimsical element, contrasting with the more structured and metallic tone of her outfit.Overall, Wiener’s artwork is a celebration of theatricality and bold artistic vision, presenting the diva as both a performer and a larger-than-life figure, eternally caught in her moment of glory against the universe’s expansive canvas.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
