More about this artwork

Peter Paul Rubens, a master of the Baroque style, brings to life an intense and dynamic vision of the Apostles in the sketch "Three Groups of Apostles in a Last Supper." Created around 1600–1604, this artwork offers a fascinating glimpse into Rubens’ preparatory process for larger compositions. In the sketch, the viewer is drawn into three distinct groups of figures, each seemingly caught in a moment of fervent discussion or deep contemplation. The figures are rendered with vigorous, expressive lines that capture both the physical and emotional intensity of the scene. Rubens' skilled use of drawing breathes life into each Apostle, displaying a range of expressions from solemnity to earnest discussion.Though the artwork is monochromatic, the depth and movement inherent in Rubens' style are vividly apparent. This study not only showcases Rubens’ mastery of human anatomy and expression but also his ability to organize complex group interactions in a cohesive and compelling manner."Three Groups of Apostles in a Last Supper" exemplifies the artist’s preparatory work, where the fluidity of thoughts and variations of poses were explored before committing to the final paint on canvas.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
