More about this artwork

Exploring the celestial drama and vibrant movements of Peter Paul Ruben's masterpiece, "The Assumption of the Virgin" (1624), visitors are drawn into a realm of divine intervention and spiritual ecstasy. This painting captures the moment when the Virgin Mary ascends to Heaven, surrounded by a chorus of angels and watched by the apostles below. In this dynamic composition, the central figure of the Virgin Mary is depicted with outstretched arms, her gaze lifting towards the heavenly light. Her robe billows around her, adding a sense of motion and grandeur to her ascent. Above her, angels swirl in a joyful dance, guiding and celebrating her rise.Beneath her, the apostles express varied emotions of awe and wonder, their faces turned upwards, hands reaching out as if to grasp the miraculous sight or bless their departing mother. Their gathering around an empty tomb, further emphasizes the miraculous nature of this event.Rubens's use of dramatic chiaroscuro and vigorous brushstrokes enhances the spiritual intensity of the scene. The glowing palette and the skillful play of light not only highlight the divine nature of Mary's assumption but also create a vivid contrast with the earthly tones of the apostles, marking the separation between the human and the divine. This painting offers a captivating narrative full of emotion and movement, inviting viewers to reflect on the themes of faith, redemption, and the heavenly reward awaiting the faithful.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
