More about this artwork

In the painting "Meeting of King Ferdinand of Hungary and the Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand of Spain at Nördlingen (1635)" by Peter Paul Rubens, viewers are drawn into a masterful depiction of a significant historical event. The artwork vividly captures the encounter between two royal figures of the 17th century amidst the backdrop of the Battle of Nördlingen. The composition is bustling with energy and movement. In the center, the focal point is the momentous handshake between King Ferdinand of Hungary, in splendid armor and on horseback, and the Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand of Spain, dressed in a striking red tunic. This handshake not only symbolizes a personal greeting but also represents a political alliance and shared interests in the turbulent context of the Thirty Years' War.Around these central figures, Rubens masterfully arranges various groups that contribute to the narrative depth of the scene. To the left, we see allegorical figures, possibly representing virtues or muses, which add a mythological layer to the historical narrative, suggesting that the meeting holds a greater, almost divine significance. Meanwhile, the group of soldiers and attendants surrounding the royals emphasizes the military and political implications of this encounter.Rubens' use of vibrant colors and dynamic brushstrokes injects a sense of immediacy and importance into the scene, while the rough, sketch-like quality of the painting gives it an impromptu, almost candid feel. This technique allows the viewer to feel as though they are witnessing the historical moment unfold in real time.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
