More about this artwork

Bauer (1933) by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner"Portrait of Dr. Bauer" is a striking creation by German artist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, rendered in 1933. This painting is an exemplary piece of Expressionism, where emotion and personal response to the world take precedence over realistic representation. The painting captures the visage of Dr. Bauer, regarded for its intense emotive quality and vibrant color palette. Kirchner employs stark, contrasting colors to divide the portrait, creating a juxtaposition that seems to mirror internal versus external selves, or perhaps different facets of the subject’s psyche. The right side of the face is painted in a dark, almost bruised purple, subtly textured and shadowy. In contrast, the left side is depicted with lighter hues, predominantly yellow, hinting at a more visible, perhaps more sociable side of Dr. Bauer.A notable feature of Kirchner's work here is his use of exaggerated features and lines to convey emotion more potently. Dr. Bauer's eyes, strikingly blue, are wide and penetrating, suggesting a depth of knowledge or intensity of character. The use of thick, defined strokes and exaggerated, almost caricature-like facial features sharpens the psychological impact of the portrait, inviting viewers to ponder the subject's thoughts and emotions.Kirchner's portrait is not just a visual exploration but also an emotional dialogue expressed through color and form, typical of Expressionist art. It encourages us to look beyond the surface, contemplating the complex interplay of Dr. Bauer’s professional identity and personal trials, possibly mirrored in the duality of the color scheme and the facial expressions depicted.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) was one of the most important German Expressionist painters. He was a co-founder of Die Brücke, a group of German expressionist artists formed in Dresden in 1905. Die Brücke and Kirchner took inspiration from Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch, as well as African and Oceanic art. They used woodblock printing as a medium to showcase their signature style: flat, unrealistic images with vivid colors. The recurring themes in Kirchner's artworks included exotic cultures, faraway landscapes, self-portraits, dancers and Berlin street life. His paintings and prints effectively portrayed non-European cultures despite the fact that he never traveled outside of Europe.
