More about this artwork
On display is an exquisite piece by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a leading figure in the German Expressionist movement. This artwork, entitled "Straßenszene mit Hündchen – Die Vorübergehenden" (Street Scene with Little Dog – The Passersby), crafted in 1914, captures the vibrant and somewhat chaotic essence of urban life at the brink of the First World War.The etching style utilized by Kirchner engenders a sense of immediacy and fluid motion, portraying figures that seem to dissolve into ephemeral brush strokes and lines. The composition thrives on dynamic contrasts, where the bold, sketch-like lines convey both the physical movement and the psychological intensity of the passersby. An almost ghostly dog appears near the bottom left, serving as a quirky focal point amidst the human figures.Kirchner's work is renowned for its ability to capture the rhythm and speed of city life. His figures are elongated, twisted, and often appear in hurried motion, reflecting the modern experience of urbanity and the alienation it can sometimes entail.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) was one of the most important German Expressionist painters. He was a co-founder of Die Brücke, a group of German expressionist artists formed in Dresden in 1905. Die Brücke and Kirchner took inspiration from Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch, as well as African and Oceanic art. They used woodblock printing as a medium to showcase their signature style: flat, unrealistic images with vivid colors. The recurring themes in Kirchner's artworks included exotic cultures, faraway landscapes, self-portraits, dancers and Berlin street life. His paintings and prints effectively portrayed non-European cultures despite the fact that he never traveled outside of Europe.
