More about this artwork
The painting illustrates an abstract yet delicate line drawing of a seated female figure, rendered with minimalistic yet expressive black contours against a plain, beige background. The figure is bent forward with her torso nudging towards her laps, and her hands covering her face in a protective or possibly introspective posture. The lines defining her back arch softly, indicating the turn of her body, while her legs are drawn tucked underneath, shaping the form and motion of her pose. The overall form is simplified, focusing on the fluidity and emotion of line rather than detailed anatomical accuracy, which is characteristic of Schiele's work.

Egon Schiele was an Austrian painter. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.
