More about this artwork
The painting features a male figure seated, depicted from a side perspective with his face turned slightly towards the viewer. His expression is contemplative, with his eyes looking off to the side. The figure's hair is neatly styled, and he wears a shirt that seems to blend subtly into a loosely fitting jacket. Egon Schiele has rendered the clothing with bold, vibrant colors, mainly in shades of blue and purple, contrasting with the more subdued tones of his skin. The brushwork is expressive, highlighting the textures of the fabric and the contours of his face and hands. The background is minimal, focusing attention on the figure.

Egon Schiele was an Austrian painter. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.
