More about this artwork
This painting features a middle-aged man with a stern yet thoughtful expression. His hair is thick and wavy, predominantly white with hints of gray, matched by a bushy, silvery mustache. He is dressed in a dark suit with a well-defined lapel, over a similarly dark vest and a crisp white shirt. A red tie with small, possibly darker patterns peeks from under his collar. The background is roughly painted, with dark vertical strokes on one side and a lighter, more neutral shade on the other, possibly suggesting a shadowed environment or the differentiation between space and figure. This setting contrasts sharply with the detailed rendering of his face, emphasizing his features and expression.

Egon Schiele was an Austrian painter. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.
