More about this artwork
The painting captures a rugged mountain stream, depicted through a series of expressive, jagged lines. Egon Schiele uses sketchy strokes to detail rocks and stones of various sizes and shapes along and within the stream's flow. Delicate lines indicate the movement of water, swirling around the rocks, suggesting a crisp, lively current. The natural setting is sparse with vegetation, hinted at with minimal, almost accidental scribbles. At certain points, the water seems to rush over and around obstacles, creating a textured pattern that evokes the sound and feel of a mountain stream. Schiele's signature, a small rectangular stamp, sits discreetly at the bottom right corner, affirming the artist's connection to his landscape studies.

Egon Schiele was an Austrian painter. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.
