More about this artwork

"Moonlight" by Edvard Munch is a stunning and evocative painting that captures the essence of night through a unique and emotive lens. This artwork features a shadowy figure standing on a balcony engulfed in darkness, with their face gently illuminated by the soft glow of moonlight. The enigmatic presence of the figure creates a compelling focal point amidst an atmosphere laden with deep blues and greens, suggesting the quiet and introspective nature of night. The background is articulated with dark, swirling patterns of color, representing the trees or perhaps curtains stirred by a breeze, adding a sense of movement and mystery to the scene. To the right, a window pane brightly reflects the moonlight, contrasting sharply with the otherwise dim and muted palette of the painting. This window not only introduces a light source but subtly connects the inner world of the home to the outer world of nature and night.Overall, Munch's "Moonlight" skillfully conjures a mood of solitude and contemplation, using color and composition to delve into themes of isolation and the introspective moments that often accompany nighttime. The painting invites viewers to ponder the quiet thoughts and emotions that stir within the shadows.

Edvard Munch (12 December 1863 – 23 January 1944) was a Norwegian painter. His best known work, The Scream (1893), has become one of Western art's most iconic images.

His childhood was overshadowed by illness, bereavement and the dread of inheriting a mental condition that ran in the family. Studying at the Royal School of Art and Design in Kristiania (today's Oslo), Munch began to live a bohemian life under the influence of the nihilist Hans Jæger, who urged him to paint his own emotional and psychological state ('soul painting'); from this emerged his distinctive style.
