More about this artwork
This striking painting by Joseph Pennell, titled "Lest Liberty Perish From The Face Of The Earth - Buy Bonds," is a powerful piece of propaganda art from World War I. The painting depicts a dramatized and apocalyptic view of New York City under attack, emphasizing the potential danger if the war wasn't supported by the public through the purchase of war bonds. The focal point of the artwork is the Statue of Liberty, which stands resiliently in the foreground, yet surrounded by a sea of fiery red and orange colors, suggesting a massive inferno or extensive bombing. The Statue of Liberty, a symbol of freedom and democracy, appears as if it's defending the harbor against the onslaught. In the background, Pennell has drawn an outline of New York City's skyline, also engulfed in flames, including skyscrapers that are faintly visible through the blazing atmosphere. The Brooklyn Bridge on the right side links the cityscape, indicating the geographic setting and adding depth to the scene. The vivid use of reds and oranges not only grabs attention but also conveys a sense of urgency and destruction, stirring emotions and underscoring the critical message of the artwork.
