More about this artwork
This painting by Mary Cassatt, titled "Woman With Baby," beautifully captures a tender and intimate moment between a mother and her child. In this piece, the mother is depicted holding her young, naked baby close to her chest, providing a sense of warmth and protection. The mother's face is turned towards her child, gazing at them with a look of affection and maternal love. The baby seems comfortable and secure in the mother's arms, with one hand resting on the mother's shoulder and the other held by the mother's gentle grasp. The child's cheeks are rosy, suggesting health and vitality, and they seem to be looking slightly away from the mother, possibly exploring the environment with innocent curiosity.Cassatt's use of color and texture in this portrait enhances its emotional depth. The mother is draped in a robe of rich orange and yellow tones, which contrast against the soft, pastel background. The brushstrokes are loose and expressive, giving the painting a vibrant, lively feel, while still maintaining a softness that is characteristic of Cassatt’s style.Overall, this painting evokes the universal theme of motherly love and the bond between a mother and her child.

Mary Stevenson Cassatt was an American painter and printmaker. She was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh’s North Side), but lived much of her adult life in France where she befriended Edgar Degas and exhibited with the Impressionists. Cassatt often created images of the social and private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children.
She was described by Gustave Geffroy as one of "les trois grandes dames" (the three great ladies) of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Berthe Morisot. In 1879, Diego Martelli compared her to Degas, as they both sought to depict movement, light, and design in the most modern sense.
