More about this artwork

This painting, titled "Nurse and Child" by Mary Cassatt, depicts a tender and intimate scene between a nurse and a young child. Rendered in pastel tones and soft brushwork, typical of Cassatt's style, the painting highlights a moment of nurture and care. The nurse, dressed in a light blue blouse with her hair tied back, holds a baby wrapped in a white blanket with soft pink accents. The composition focuses on the gentle gaze of the nurse toward the child, emphasizing the relationship and emotional connection between the two. The child, comfortably enfolded in the nurse’s arms, looks out toward the viewer with a calm and inquisitive expression. The background is softly rendered, enhancing the focus on the figures, and painted in warm earth tones that contrast subtly with the cool colors used for the figures. This color scheme helps to draw the viewer into the warmth and quiet affection of the scene.Cassatt often explored themes of maternal care and the intimate bonds between caregivers and children in her work, using her art to reflect on the roles and perceptions of women in society during her time. This piece is a beautiful example of her focus on the tender, everyday moments of domestic life.

Mary Stevenson Cassatt was an American painter and printmaker. She was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh’s North Side), but lived much of her adult life in France where she befriended Edgar Degas and exhibited with the Impressionists. Cassatt often created images of the social and private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children.

She was described by Gustave Geffroy as one of "les trois grandes dames" (the three great ladies) of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Berthe Morisot. In 1879, Diego Martelli compared her to Degas, as they both sought to depict movement, light, and design in the most modern sense.
