More about this artwork
"Woman with a Sunflower" by Mary Cassatt showcases a tender and intimate scene of a mother and her children, capturing the soft, delicate essence of domestic life and maternal affection, typical themes in Cassatt’s work. The painting features a mother dressed in a flowing, yellow robe with a large sunflower pinned at her side. She is seated with her young child in her lap, who appears fascinated by a small circular mirror the child is holding. The mirror reflects the child's own image, adding an interesting layer of curiosity and innocence to the scene.Another child, partially visible and likely older, stands behind them, amplifying the familial atmosphere in the composition. The background is sketchily painted, perhaps indicating a domestic interior, with the focus solidly on the interaction and the emotional bond between the mother and her children. The use of light, color, and loose brushstrokes emphasizes a sense of immediacy and the fleeting nature of childhood, highlighting Cassatt’s impressionist skills. This artwork is significant, not only for its aesthetic and emotional depth but also for how it portrays the theme of motherhood with sophistication and sensitivity, a hallmark of Cassatt's artistic legacy.

Mary Stevenson Cassatt was an American painter and printmaker. She was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh’s North Side), but lived much of her adult life in France where she befriended Edgar Degas and exhibited with the Impressionists. Cassatt often created images of the social and private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children.
She was described by Gustave Geffroy as one of "les trois grandes dames" (the three great ladies) of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Berthe Morisot. In 1879, Diego Martelli compared her to Degas, as they both sought to depict movement, light, and design in the most modern sense.
