More about this artwork

"Rainy Landscape" by Pierre Bonnard is a captivating painting that offers a vibrant and textured portrayal of a rural scene. At first glance, the palette employed seems infused with vivid, even somewhat muted, earth tones, reflecting perhaps the obscured light of a rainy day. The composition features several buildings dotted across a rolling landscape. The central building is prominently two-storied, painted with a white facade and a red-tile roof, contrasting briskly against the grassy fields. The landscape itself is split by pathways or patches of fields in varying shades of green, suggesting cultivation or different crop types, adorned sporadically with trees and shrubs. The foreground of the painting is more roughly brushed, with a tangle of tree branches and emerging greenery, capturing the essence of nature's unruliness in damp weather. The sky, painted with broad strokes of grey and white, adds a sense of overcast heaviness typical of a rainy atmosphere.Bonnard’s use of brushwork here is dynamic and appears almost impressionistic, focusing on the overall effect of the scene rather than detailed accuracy. This technique evokes a sense of movement and moisture in the air, almost as if the viewer can feel the damp coolness of the rainy landscape. Overall, this painting is not just a visual representation but an atmospheric immersion into a serene, rainy day in the countryside.

Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) was a French post-impressionist painter, printmaker, and the leader of the Intimist art movement. He is regarded as one of the greatest colourists of modern art. Together with other young artists in Montmarte, Bonnard co-founded the group known as Les Nabis, translated from the arabic word “prophet”. He was known for a painting style that was very intimate, featuring friends in a garden, nudes, interiors and sunlit objects of everyday life. He began by painting in watercolor, composing scenes and deeply familiarizing himself with the subject, before transferring the composition to canvas. In many of his paintings, his mistress Marthe was the main subject. She was his most important model and was often pictured nude, after 30 years they finally married.
