More about this artwork

This artwork by Pierre Bonnard, titled "Couple Embracing, From 'Daphnis and Chloe'," captures a tender and intimate moment between a couple. The image features two figures closely embraced, with their heads leaning against each other in a serene and affectionate pose. The sketch is done with a soft, delicate touch that conveys deep emotion and sensitivity through its lines and shading. The subtle use of light and shadow on their faces and bodies enhances the romantic and dreamy quality of the scene. The background is minimalistic, keeping the focus tightly on the couple, and there are slight hints of foliage that suggest an outdoor or natural setting, which aligns with the pastoral themes commonly found in the story of "Daphnis and Chloe." This ancient Greek tale, known for its bucolic and romantic elements, appears to be the inspiration for this artwork, which is reflected in the gentle and idyllic portrayal of the couple.Below the image, there is text, likely a passage from the "Daphnis and Chloe" story, reinforcing the literary connection and adding a narrative layer to the visual representation, engaging the viewer both visually and intellectually. The imagery and text combined evoke a timeless story of love and intimacy.

Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) was a French post-impressionist painter, printmaker, and the leader of the Intimist art movement. He is regarded as one of the greatest colourists of modern art. Together with other young artists in Montmarte, Bonnard co-founded the group known as Les Nabis, translated from the arabic word “prophet”. He was known for a painting style that was very intimate, featuring friends in a garden, nudes, interiors and sunlit objects of everyday life. He began by painting in watercolor, composing scenes and deeply familiarizing himself with the subject, before transferring the composition to canvas. In many of his paintings, his mistress Marthe was the main subject. She was his most important model and was often pictured nude, after 30 years they finally married.
