More about this artwork

Edward Ladell, a distinguished still life painter of the Victorian era, excels in his exceptional attention to detail and rich color palette in "Still Life with a Tazza, Fruit, and a Wine Glass." This meticulously crafted painting invites viewers into a world of opulent tranquility and lush detail. The composition centrally features an array of freshly picked fruits, each rendered with striking realism. Prominent in the frame is a symphony of grapes in hues of deep blues and purples, nestled alongside a vibrant, partially peeled peach whose color transitions smoothly from a soft yellow to a blushing red. The foreground shows an open pomegranate with seeds that glisten like tiny jewels, and a cluster of white grapes adds a burst of light to the arrangement.Adding to the richness of the scene, a decorative silver tazza, a shallow ornamental dish on a stem, holds raspberries and is positioned elegantly atop a pedestal adorned with intricate designs, highlighting Ladell’s meticulous skill in depicting reflections and metallic textures. Beside it, a slender wine glass offers a transparent contrast to the dense textures of the fruits, demonstrating the painter's mastery in capturing different materials. The overall dark background enhances the vividness of the fruits and the gleam of the glass and silver, focusing the viewer's attention on the artistry of the still life arrangement. The inclusion of finely detailed leaves with realistic venation provides a fresh, organic touch that balances the composition.Edward Ladell’s work is a masterclass in still life, showcasing not just his technical skill, but his ability to compose a scene that feels both timeless and immediately engaging.

Edward Ladell was a British painter known for his still-life paintings of fruit, flowers, and glass vessels. Reminiscent of the 17th-century Dutch still-life traditions, he set his subjects on a marble ledge draped with an oriental rug. Born on April 12, 1821 in Hasketon, United Kingdom, little is known of his personal life, other than that he spent his teenage years working for his father who was a coach builder. Although he was mostly self-taught, it is thought that he may have apprenticed as a pattern designer for a Flemish textile company in Colchester when he was a young man. The artist went on to exhibit at the Royal Academy, the British Institute, and the Royal Society of British Artists. He died on November 9, 1886, in Exeter, United Kingdom. Today, his works are held in the collections of the Museum of Croydon in London, the Royal Albert Museum in Exeter, and the Mercer Art Gallery in Harrogate.
