More about this artwork
The painting depicts a serene lakeside landscape, portraying the village of Cassone situated at the edge of a bright, reflective body of water. A prominent church with a large, rounded arch doorway and a stout bell tower rises above clusters of quaint houses nestled amongst lush greenery. Tall, dark cypress trees punctuate the verdant scene, standing in elegant contrast to the predominantly pale, textured facades of the buildings. The entire scene is rendered in a mosaic of vibrant, dappled brushstrokes, capturing the shimmering interplay of light and color that animates this idyllic setting.

Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was one of the greatest Austrian symbolist painters of the Art Nouveau era. Renowned as one of the most prominent founding members, and as a president of the Vienna Art Nouveau movement (Vienna Secession). His works were mainly paintings, murals, and sketches. Marked by his numerous erotic drawings, Klimt's primary subject were female figures, and at one point his work was even criticized as pornographic. Klimt found financial success in his "Golden Phase" with decorative techniques and the prominent use of gold leaf in his paintings.
