The composition highlights her curved back and the gentle contours of her shoulders and neck, leading up to a neatly arranged classical hairstyle that adds a touch of the historical to the modern realism of her form. The warm, earthy tones of the background envelop the figure, focusing attention on the naturalistic details of her skin. Etty’s use of light and shadow not only enhances the three-dimensional effect of the painting but also imparts a soft and intimate atmosphere. William Etty was an English artist best known for his historical paintings featuring nude figures. He was the first significant British painter of nudes and still lifes. Born in York, he left school at 12 and became a printer in Hull. After seven years, he finished his apprenticeship and moved to London, where in 1807 entered the schools of the Royal Academy. There he studied under Thomas Lawrence and learned by copying the works of other artists.
