The painting displays a sinuous male figure, contorted in a dramatic and angular seated position. His form is slender, starkly outlined in Egon Schiele’s characteristic style of bold, disquieting lines. The figure’s skin is rendered in pale yellows and earth tones, with touches of red at his nipples and lips, enhancing the raw, visceral quality of the portrait. His right arm awkwardly stretches above and behind his head, grasping the left arm, which crosses behind his neck. His face is turned towards the viewer with an intense, uneasy gaze and his deep-set, dark eyes seem to penetrate. Dark tousled hair adds to the overall tortured impression of his pose.
