More about this artwork

This artwork by Egon Schiele, titled "Standing Nude Girl, Facing Left," dated 1918, showcases a slender, nude female figure seen from behind. The girl is positioned slightly to the left, allowing a profile view that accentuates the curvature of her back, buttocks, and legs. Schiele's use of line is typically expressive and angular, capturing raw physical details and the subtle tension in the subject's posture. The girl's hair is remarkably detailed, long and wavy, cascading down her back and adding a soft, fluid contrast to her otherwise starkly defined body. The medium appears to be pencil or charcoal on a tan paper, a choice that imbues the sketch with a warm, natural tone. Schiele’s signature can be seen prominently in the lower right corner of the piece.Egon Schiele's work is known for its intensity and unflinching portrayal of the human form, often exploring themes of sexuality and existential discomfort. His style is marked by quick, gestural lines which here beautifully capture the essence of the human body with both a sense of vulnerability and strength. The simplicity of the background focuses all attention on the form of the standing girl, highlighting Schiele's skill in drawing and his nuanced approach to human anatomy.

Egon Schiele was an Austrian painter. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.
