The painting depicts a fantastical creature with a whimsical yet somewhat menacing appearance. It features golden eyes, a scruffy, fur-like texture that is light green in color, and sharp, distinctive features such as pointed ears and what appears to be eyebrows. The creature’s face contains a combination of frustration and weary sadness, with its downturned mouth and exposed teeth. Additional elements, that resemble vegetal forms or perhaps tendrils, extend from the creature, contributing to its mythical quality.

Kamisaka Sekka was an important artistic figure in early twentieth-century Japan. Born in Kyoto to a Samurai family, his talents for art and design were recognized early. He eventually allied himself with the traditional Rinpa school of art. He is considered the last great proponent of this artistic tradition.
