More about this artwork

"Swimming II" by Arūnas Žilys is a striking and otherworldly painting that features three human figures within a large, bowl-like boat. The color palette is warm and rich, dominated by golden, reddish, and earth tones, contributing to the overall ethereal atmosphere of the piece. The scene is both serene and surreal. The figures are stylized with elongated forms and simplified, almost mask-like facial features, giving them a timeless, iconic quality. The central figure stands and appears to be pulling or adjusting a vertical rod, while a second figure to the left, who also has elongated features, holds a trumpet-like object. The third figure sits at the right end of the boat, seeming to cast a fishing line or interact with the vertical rod in some manner. What strikes the viewer most is the tranquil yet enigmatic quality conveyed through both the expressions of the figures and the subtle details scattered throughout the painting. The textured surface of the boat, combined with the vibrant and shifting gradient of colors, suggests layers and depth, both visually and symbolically. The backdrop, featuring a draped, curtain-like element, adds to the staged, theatrical feel of the painting, further enhancing its dreamlike and mystical atmosphere. The use of light and shadow, along with the intricate details of the figures' attire, adds another layer of richness and complexity, making "Swimming II" a captivating visual enigma that invites viewers to immerse themselves in its mysterious world.

They‘re usually full of mistery and suspense, as if you are looking at fairy tale frozen in time. The paintings transport you back in time, and all sudden you‘re wondering whether you‘ve seen this setting before, some time your own childhood fantasies. The subjects usually entail many different cultural aspects from ancient history to modern times, and could be attributed to vitually any part of the world, thus making Arūnas‘ paintings highly admired by people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. The painting subjects are instantly admirable. They avoid main features of post-modernism art, such as declarations of aggressiveness, ugliness and anger.
