More about this artwork

Franz Xaver Petter's captivating still-life painting titled "Blumenstück mit Ananas, Weintrauben und Papagei" (Flower Piece with Pineapple, Grapes, and Parrot) is a vivid composition that dazzles the viewer with its intricate details and vibrant colors, underlying the unmatched expertise of the 19th-century Austrian painter. Created in 1833, this work is a true testament to Petter's mastery in blending the natural with the artistic to produce strikingly realistic and elaborate floral arrangements. At the heart of the painting sits an ornate gold vase, overflowing with a lush bouquet of various flowers including roses, lilies, and exotic blooms that boast a spectrum of colors from deep reds to soft whites. Each petal is rendered with such precision that the textures seem almost tangible. Complementing the floral display, the composition features richly colored fruit such as split pineapples with their rough, golden textures, and deep purple grapes that add a touch of opulence to the scene. The still life is further brought to life with the inclusion of a vibrant green parrot on the right-hand side of the canvas. Perched amid the foliage, the parrot's vivid feathers echo the colors found in the bouquet, creating a harmonious balance between fauna and flora. This addition not only adds a sense of life to the painting but also showcases Petter's skill in depicting the silky feathers and lively eyes of the bird, adding another layer of realism to the work.

Franz Xaver Andreas Petter (23 October 1791 – 11 May 1866) was an Austrian artist. Petter was born in Lichtental; his father was a painter of porcelain, and it was intended that he should follow in the same profession, but Petter developed an interest in oil painting. He studied under Johann Baptist Drechsler at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.

Franz Xaver Petter was one of the most important still-life artists of the Biedermeier period in Vienna. He specialised in floral arrangements, and later arrangements of fruit, and landscapes with flowers, continuing the Dutch Golden Age flower still life depicting traditions. Petter's pictures were very popular with the Austrian nobility.

Petter married Catherine Hamböck (1793-1858). They had two sons, Theodore, who became an artist, and Gustav, a musician. Franz Xaver Petter died in May 1866 in Vienna.
