More about this artwork

Welcome to a vivid exploration of early 20th-century modernism through the captivating abstract painting "Composition" by Norwegian artist Thorvald Hellesen. Created around 1920, this exceptional artwork stands as a testament to the dynamic explorations of form, color, and space that marked the European avant-garde movements. In this painting, Hellesen's mastery of abstraction is evident. He constructs a complex interplay of shapes that veer between geometric and organic, creating a fluid yet fragmented visual landscape. The artist employs a palette dominated by shades of black, white, gray, and touches of bold red and blue, which punctuate the composition and guide the viewer's eye across the canvas. The subtle use of color highlights the textural contrasts and depth, adding a tactile quality to the work."Composition" embodies a sense of balanced chaos, with each element carefully placed to maintain a harmonious whole while still suggesting movement. The fluidity of the curves juxtaposed with the rigidity of the angular forms fosters a dynamic tension, an emblematic feature of Hellesen's abstract expressions. This painting invites viewers to delve into an introspective journey. It encourages the discovery of myriad interpretations and personal connections, reflecting the transformative power of abstract art to transcend the literal and tap into emotional and intellectual depths. As one of the pioneering figures in abstraction, Thorvald Hellesen's "Composition" provides insight into the artist’s innovative approach to capturing the essence of modernity—a theme resonant throughout his career.

Thorvald Hellesen was a Norwegian abstract artist, designer and painter. His art was associated with the Orphic Cubism movement.

Thorvald Hellesen (sometimes spelled Thorwald) was born in Christiania (now Oslo), Norway. He was the son of Thorvald Hellesen (1862-94) and Ida Selmer (1858-1945). His father was a Supreme Court lawyer and his mother was the daughter of Prime Minister Christian Selmer. He passed his art exams but spent a year at the Norwegian Military Academy before deciding to become an artist.

He then entered the newly established Oslo National Academy of Arts, where he studied with Christian Krohg (1910–11). After that in 1912 moved to Paris. There he worked with Fernand Léger and met Picasso.
