More about this artwork

Franz Xaver Petter's exquisite painting titled "A Bronze Urn Of Flowers, With A Melon, Peaches And Grapes, A Butterfly And A Caterpillar" emanates the tremendous skill and nuanced detail characteristic of 19th-century still-life artistry. Created in 1812, this striking work showcases a lush arrangement of florals erupting vibrantly from a classical bronze urn. The composition revels in the rich diversity of nature's textures and colors, exhibiting blossoms in every hue—from the deep blues of hydrangeas to the vibrant reds of poppies and gentle pinks of roses.Petter does not confine his canvas to flora alone; he skillfully integrates fruits and creatures into the tableau, enhancing its lifelike quality. A sliced open melon, with its succulent orange flesh, lies prominently at the forefront, accompanied by the soft textures of ripe peaches and a cluster of dark and light grapes, suggesting richness and bounty. The realism is further underscored by the presence of a butterfly and a caterpillar, each illustrated with careful attention to their delicate forms and natural hues, adding a layer of dynamic vitality to the still life. This painting is not merely a visual treat; it is a thoughtful exploration of the beauty and transient nature of life. Each element, from the blooming flowers to the ripening fruits and ephemeral insects, speaks to the cycle of growth and decay, resonating with themes of abundance and the fleeting moment.

Franz Xaver Andreas Petter (23 October 1791 – 11 May 1866) was an Austrian artist. Petter was born in Lichtental; his father was a painter of porcelain, and it was intended that he should follow in the same profession, but Petter developed an interest in oil painting. He studied under Johann Baptist Drechsler at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.

Franz Xaver Petter was one of the most important still-life artists of the Biedermeier period in Vienna. He specialised in floral arrangements, and later arrangements of fruit, and landscapes with flowers, continuing the Dutch Golden Age flower still life depicting traditions. Petter's pictures were very popular with the Austrian nobility.

Petter married Catherine Hamböck (1793-1858). They had two sons, Theodore, who became an artist, and Gustav, a musician. Franz Xaver Petter died in May 1866 in Vienna.
