More about this artwork

"Judith and the Head of Holofernes" by Joachim Wtewael is a striking painting that combines vivid realism with intense drama. This artwork, created around 1595–1600, is a powerful depiction of the biblical story of Judith, a widow who seduced and then beheaded the Assyrian general Holofernes to save her city and people. In this portrayal, Judith is depicted at the moment of triumph, her face upturned with an expression mixture of resolve and repulsion. She elegantly holds the general's severed head by the hair in a delicate yet firm grasp, symbolizing her victory and the lengths to which she went to achieve it. Her attire, rich with vibrant colors and intricate details, contrasts sharply with the grim nature of her action, highlighting her noble cause against the brutal necessity of her deeds.A young maid assists Judith, standing in the background and gazing upon Holofernes’ head with a grimace, reflecting the horror of the act. The folds of the shimmering fabrics, the soft flesh tones, and the emotional intensity are captured with exquisite skill, typical of Wtewael's Mannerist style, which emphasizes complexity and artificial elegance.

Joachim Anthoniszoon Wtewael was a Dutch Mannerist painter and draughtsman, as well as a highly successful flax merchant, and town councillor of Utrecht. Wtewael was one of the leading Dutch exponents of Northern Mannerism, and his distinctive and attractive style remained largely untouched by the naturalistic developments happening around him, "characterized by masterfully drawn, highly polished figures often set in capricious poses".
