More about this artwork
Joseph Wopfner's vivid depiction of wood fishermen in rough waters is a stunning scene of action and perseverance. In "Gefährliche Anlandung der Holzfischer am Bodensee" (Dangerous Landing of the Wood Fishermen on Lake Constance), painted around 1885-1890, the artist captures with raw immediacy the battle against nature's untamed forces. The painting portrays a group of fishermen struggling to navigate and control their boat amidst fierce, wave-tossed waters near a wooden pier. The tumultuous lake, depicted with vigorous brushstrokes that swirl around the boat, evokes the peril that these men face. Their weathered faces and tense body movements suggest both determination and the strain of their labor.Observing them from the safety of the pier, some characters hold onto their hats and peer anxiously at the boat, illustrating the suspense and concern of the moment. This artistic composition not only showcases Wopfner's skill in rendering water and human emotion but also highlights the everyday heroism of those who work at the mercy of the natural elements.

Joseph Wopfner was an Austrian painter best known for his depictions of landscapes in the Chiemgau region of Bavaria. His vividly colored paintings, reminiscent work of the Impressionists, were based off of plein-air studies the artist made on location. As a result, there is strong sense of movement and light in the artist’s work. For example, in his painting Fishermen's family on the Chiemsee, he painted a family wading in a lake—emphasizing the light filling the sky and the reflectivity of the water.
