More about this artwork

In the captivating painting "Golden Pheasant" by Charles Robert Knight, the viewer is transported to a serene, autumnal landscape that is both vibrant and tranquil. Dating from the period between 1918 and 1922, Knight masterfully renders two golden pheasants in their natural habitat. The male pheasant, with its striking array of colors, dominates the foreground, proudly displaying bold hues of red, blue, and gold, along with an impressively long, patterned tail. Its counterpart, the female, is depicted with subtler brown and beige plumage, blending more naturally into the grassy surroundings. The background of the painting offers a glimpse of a richly colored autumn forest and hints of a distant blue sky and waterbody, providing a sense of depth and openness. The leaves appear to be in mid-fall, dappling the ground with gold, red, and orange, which compliments the vivid colors of the male pheasant. This harmonious interaction between the birds and their environment captures the essence of the wild and the fleeting beauty of a moment in nature."Golden Pheasant" is not just a testament to Knight's skill as a painter of wildlife, but also to his ability to evoke emotion and appreciation for the natural world through his art.

Charles Robert Knight (October 21, 1874 – April 15, 1953) was an American wildlife and paleoartist best known for his detailed paintings of dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals. His works have been reproduced in many books and are currently on display at several major museums in the United States. One of his most famous works is a mural of Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops, which helped establish the two dinosaurs as "mortal enemies" in popular culture. Working at a time when many fossil discoveries were fragmentary and dinosaur anatomy was not well understood, many of his illustrations have later been shown to be incorrect representations. Nevertheless, he has been hailed as "one of the great popularizers of the prehistoric past".
