More about this artwork

Encounter tranquility and a moment frozen in time with Jan van de Cappelle’s serene painting, "Ships at Anchor on a Quiet Sea." Painted between approximately 1640 and 1679, this masterful artwork captures the calm and majestic beauty of seafaring life in the golden age of Dutch naval power. As your eyes traverse this peaceful seascape, you will first notice the large, cloudy sky, which seems to weigh down upon the scene, its melancholy augmented by the gentle light that peeks through the clouds. The sky, with its dynamic textures and shades, sets a dramatic backdrop that contrasts with the stillness of the sea below. In the foreground, various ships are depicted at anchor, positioned in thoughtful repose. Each vessel shows meticulous detail in its rigging and sails—some gently furled and others hanging loose, bearing no urgency to navigate the waters. On the left, a smaller boat occupies the foreground, occupied by figures attending to their duties. This inclusion of human presence adds a touch of life and daily routine to the otherwise still waterscape. To the right, a larger ship stands majestically; its sails partially raised as if in a moment of paused action. In the distance, more ships loom on the horizon, perhaps waiting for the wind or instructions to move. Despite the potential for movement, there is a palpable sense of quietude that envelops the scene, inviting the viewer to ponder the lives and stories aboard these mighty vessels.

Jan van de Cappelle was a Dutch Golden Age painter of seascapes and winter landscapes, also notable as an industrialist and art collector. He is "now considered the outstanding marine painter of 17th century Holland". He lived all his life in Amsterdam, and as well as working as an artist spent much, or most, of his time helping to manage his father Franchoy's large dyeworks, which specialized in the expensive dye carmine, and which he eventually inherited in 1674.
