More about this artwork

In this warm and inviting scene, the artist Julius Caesar Ibbetson captures a timeless family moment that resonates with the viewer’s sense of nostalgia and the comfort of home. The painting, titled "Blazing on the Hearth, The Father Recounting the History to His Children," brings to life a domestic setting where storytelling is at the heart of family bonding. At the center of the composition, a father, animatedly gesturing with a small flower, captivates his audience—his children—with tales that seem as vivid as the fire blazing in the hearth beside them. The children, dressed in modest attire, listen intently, displaying a range of emotions from curiosity to delight, suggesting the tale might be one of adventure or folklore. The mother, standing slightly to the right, cradles a younger child, participating in the scene as both listener and caretaker, ensuring the safety and comfort of her family near the fire. The soft glow from the hearth illuminates the figures, casting shadows on the rough, texture-rich walls and floor, contributing to an atmosphere filled with warmth and coziness.Ibbetson’s use of watercolor allows for a masterful blend of color and detail, giving life and emotion to the characters with deft brush strokes and thoughtful composition. The result is an inviting scene that feels both candid and lovingly rendered, reflecting the painter's skill in capturingsimple yet profound everyday moments.

Julius Sergius von Klever was a Baltic German landscape painter.

His father was a chemist who taught pharmacology at the Veterinary Institute. He displayed artistic talent at an early age and took lessons from Konstantin von Kügelgen. After completing his primary education, was enrolled at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts where, at his father's insistence, he studied architecture. After a short time, however, he began to take landscape painting classes; first with Sokrat Vorobiev, then Mikhail Clodt.
