More about this artwork

Carlo Grubacs' exquisite painting, "Venice, A View of the Riva degli Schiavoni Looking Towards the Dogana and Santa Maria della Salute," offers a riveting glimpse into the serene beauty and bustling life of Venice in the 19th century. Known for his detailed and vivid cityscapes, Grubacs captivates viewers with a fascinating perspective of the iconic Riva degli Schiavoni, the lively promenade along the Venetian lagoon. In the foreground, everyday Venetian life unfolds with elegance and leisure. Groups of elegantly dressed figures converse and stroll, capturing the relaxed social atmosphere of the time. Nearby, market vendors display their goods while gondoliers navigate the small boats close to the dock, ready to ferry their next passengers. The detailed depiction of the figures demonstrates Grubacs' skill in portraying human interactions within the grandeur of Venetian architecture. The middle ground of the painting features historical architectural marvels, including the ornate facades of major landmarks like the Doge's Palace with its Gothic intricacies and the Biblioteca Marciana with its classical lines. Further into the background, the majestic dome of Santa Maria della Salute looms gracefully over the cityscape, set against a soft, light-filled sky that hints at the setting sun.Grubacs’ use of light and shadow, along with his precise architectural renderings, not only captures the physical beauty of Venice but also evokes its atmospheric charm. His work allows the viewer to take a step back in time and experience the allure and vibrant life of Venice as it once was.

Carlo Grubacs born in Venice in 1812, Carlo Grubacs was the son of a merchant navy captain whose family, originally from Montenegro, had settled in Italy in the second half of the 18th century. He studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice with Teodoro Matteini (from 1818), later specialising in views of Venice in the great tradition of 18th Century artists such as Canaletto and Guardi. His mostly small-format, lively views are executed with great precision, combining skillful drawing, meticulous attention to detail and a bright and luminous palette perfectly epitomising the Venetian 19th Century Vedutismo poetic.
