More about this artwork

We are delighted to present "Le jour," an enchanting watercolor and pencil work by the renowned French artist Léon François Comerre. Characteristic of Comerre's masterful handling of light and form, this panoramic sketch captures the serene beauty of daybreak. In this exquisite piece, the composition is divided into a sequence of vignettes that collectively celebrate the essence of day. To the left, the figures of two children engaged in play at the seaside convey a lighthearted and carefree start to the day. Moving right, the central figure, a woman draped elegantly in flowing garments, reclines in a posture of relaxed contemplation, evoking a sense of peace. Further to the right, another woman sits beside a classical fountain adorned with sculptural detail, possibly symbolizing the refreshing cool of morning. Each figure is rendered with a gentle touch, using soft colors that suggest the early hues of dawn, mirroring the calmness and tranquility of morning light. The backdrop is minimal, sketched with a delicate gradient of sky-blue, further emphasizing the theme of a new day."Le jour" invites viewers to pause and absorb the quiet joy of morning, a daily renewal that Comerre portrays with poetic grace and subtlety.

Léon François Comerre was a French academic painter, famous for his portraits of beautiful women and Oriental themes.

Comerre was born in Trélon, in the Département du Nord, the son of a schoolteacher. He moved to Lille with his family in 1853. From an early age he showed an interest in art and became a student of Alphonse Colas at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lille, winning a gold medal in 1867. From 1868 a grant from the Département du Nord allowed him to continue his studies in Paris at the famous École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in the studio of Alexandre Cabanel. There he came under the influence of orientalism.
