More about this artwork

"Fantastic Animals Left off the Ark" is an enchanting watercolor painting by the imaginative artist Herbert Crowley, created between the years 1911 and 1924. This artwork unfolds a mythical narrative wherein a medley of extraordinary and whimsical creatures appear to have been left behind from Noah's Ark. The painting is skillfully rendered in soft hues and delicate lines, accentuating the fantastical and somewhat somber theme. The composition showcases a variety of fantastical animals, each uniquely whimsical in their form and demeanor. They are depicted on and around whimsically structured blue-grey steps that seem to descend into watery depths, suggesting a sense of abandonment and perhaps the flooding myth of the Ark itself. Some of the creatures resemble familiar animals, while others are entirely products of Crowley’s vivid imagination, featuring elements like elongated necks, multiple horns, and hybrid bodies. The expression on the creatures conveys a serene resignation to their fate, and there's a poignant beauty in their calm acceptance. Simultaneously, Crowley infuses a gentle humor into the scene, with some creatures interacting playfully or looking out curiously at their surroundings. This artwork not only highlights Crowley's fantastical style but also reflects themes of exclusion and survival, engaging viewers in deeper reflections on the narrative of Noah’s Ark.
