More about this artwork
Carlo Grubacs' painting, "Piazzetta San Marco," captures a vibrant yet serene moment at one of Venice's most renowned landmarks. Through an elegant archway, the viewer is introduced to the Piazzetta San Marco, a space that connects the main square of St. Mark's with the lagoon. In this exquisite composition, the sunlight delicately plays on the ornate architecture of the Doge's Palace, with its gothic spires and intricate façades. The Piazzetta is alive with the bustling activity of figures clad in 19th-century attire — gentlemen in long coats and top hats, and women in flowing dresses, parasols in hand. A small dog trots through the foreground, adding a charming touch to the scene.Grubacs masterfully uses perspective to draw the viewer's eye towards the two famous columns of Saint Mark and Saint Todaro, which frame the view to the open lagoon beyond, hinting at the vastness of the sea and the maritime power of Venice.

Carlo Grubacs born in Venice in 1812, Carlo Grubacs was the son of a merchant navy captain whose family, originally from Montenegro, had settled in Italy in the second half of the 18th century. He studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice with Teodoro Matteini (from 1818), later specialising in views of Venice in the great tradition of 18th Century artists such as Canaletto and Guardi. His mostly small-format, lively views are executed with great precision, combining skillful drawing, meticulous attention to detail and a bright and luminous palette perfectly epitomising the Venetian 19th Century Vedutismo poetic.
