More about this artwork

Eugène Jansson's "Nocturne," painted in 1901, transports viewers into a mystic, nocturnal landscape where the formidable nature of the night sky meets the undulating movements of the sea. The painting is predominantly drenched in deep shades of blue, from the marine waters to the night sky, enveloping the scene in a serene yet intense hue that seems to pulsate with life. The surface of the water is animated by swirling forms and cresting waves, highlighted subtly with strokes of white and lighter blues, suggesting the moon's reflection dancing on the water's surface. On the horizon, one can faintly discern a city skyline — mere silhouettes against the darker backdrop of the night sky. This inclusion introduces a contrast between the natural element of the sea and the human element of the city, emphasizing the vastness and overwhelming presence of nature.Jansson, known for his works that often explore shades of blue, masterfully plays with tone and texture to evoke a sense of isolation and introspection. "Nocturne" is a testament to his ability to capture atmospheric and emotive landscapes, inviting the viewer to a moment of quietude and contemplation beneath the expansive nocturnal heavens.

Eugène Fredrik Jansson (18 March 1862, Stockholm – 15 June 1915, Skara) was a Swedish painter known for his night-time land- and cityscapes dominated by shades of blue. Towards the end of his life, from about 1904, he mainly painted male nudes. The earlier of these phases has caused him to sometimes be referred to as blåmålaren, "the blue-painter".
